The Centered Zipper application involves a Conventional Zipper (Conventional- one end of the zipper is open. You can use this for different placket openings. They work great for pants, and skirts. These zippers also come in a variety of lengths (4-108 inches!) with 7-9 inches being the norm.).
It is used at the center front or center back of a garment, on side seams, at the edges of sleeves, and in home decor.
1. Sew your seam, leaving an opening the length of your zipper teeth PLUS 3/4 inch
2. Finish the raw edges of your seam (serge, zig zag, pinking shears...)
3. Baste (stitch length to 5- sew up the seam line) the edges of the zipper opening together along the seam line
4. Press the seam allowances open
5. While looking at the WRONG side of the seam, place your zipper face down, 3/4 inch from the top. Pin in place. Make sure zipper in centered. The teeth should match up with your basted seam.
6. Working from the right side, using a zipper foot, start at the seam line plus 1/8 inch (about 3/8in). Stitch zipper. When you reach the bottom, leave needle down and pivot. Continue until you have stitched down the side, around the bottom, and up the side of the zipper.
7. Remove basting from the seam
8. Unzip and admire your work
